Last winter, I joined a contest in class and the main rule is that we had to use this knit fabric for our design. Since I was in the middle of finishing up my draft for my final jacket, I decided to join the contest so I could hit two birds with one stone(Use the free fabric as my jacket fabric for class since I was still unsure on what fabric I wanted to use. Plus, I could get cool prizes if I won). It was a very cool challenge because it had a lot of firsts for me. I didn't win the contest, but I really enjoyed making this jacket (I definitely learned a lot from this one) and I'm totally in love with it.
Summer to fall transition is both exciting and excruciating. Exciting because I get to wear and bring my sweaters, jackets, and light coats out of the closet. It's layering time!! Excruciating because there's that awkward time when you want layers of clothes, but the weather seems confused which confuses you too. And, that other awkward moment when you want to show your legs, but they're to ashy and pale since you only got to tan once or twice during summer. I almost had that awkward moment, but thanks to Influenster, I got to try the new Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs #AirbrushPerfectLegs and it gave my legs the perfect tint of a summer tan. So now I know that I can rely on my Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs to give me that summer glow when I want to wear something that would show my legs this F/W season. #fakeittillyoumakeit
I've had a dress pattern that has been waiting to be transferred into a final fabric for months, but I couldn't decide what i wanted to do with it. I've always loved bright colors in my wardrobe, but i have observed that i don't have that much orange clothing. So, the hunt begins to find the perfect orange fabric.
It took me awhile before finding the right one and here's why:
- First, i wanted to find the right kind of orange.
- Second, there's not much fabric stores close to me. I always want to see and feel the fabric first before i buy. So, I had to ask for samples from other fabric stores and i had to wait for them in the mail.
- Third, I had to play around with the samples that i got because I wanted to make sure that the dress was structured but not stiff.
After months of searching, I finally found the fabric I wanted. I was very happy with my piece because it came out looking exactly like my sketch.
Since I've been taking pattern making and design classes, most of the pieces I've done are skirts and crop tops(that are my little at-home projects). A few months ago, I finally learned how to make dresses and I am very pleased with how this garment turned out. This piece took a little more time to make due to all the extra adjustments from my pattern to the final fabric. The slightest change in any of the measurements/lines can make a very big difference to the garment and could really throw you off. I learned the hard way. Really, I did. LOL!
To get to create and design my own clothes really taught me a lot about patience, precision, and perspective.
I am wearing my halter neckline w/ front slit denim dress design, Zara Moto Jacket, and Zara booties.
December 20th was the last day of class before the holiday. It was also the last day of class ever in this classroom/dogpatch location. After almost 2 years here, I will surely miss this place and its view. I'm sad that I didn't get to try the pizza place right next to the building because they don't serve by the slice and I surely can't finish a whole pie. But I'm excited to see the new location in OAK this January. New location, new ambience, new adventures (hopefully). Also seen below are my projects for my finals. I still have to finish sewing the final piece for the top+high slit skirt combo and i still haven't found my final fabric for the dress I am making. On top of that, i still have to make one more dress when i get back. Time to start moving and time to get back on track.
